Myrna Bonsor
Inducted 2005 Fastball
|
Myrna was one of the first recruits in 1972 when Gary and Anita Ford, along with Leeta Gooding, were convincing local women to form a ball team, the Estlin 306’s. Myrna was adept at many positions; catcher, shortstop and third base and was nominated the team captain of the inaugural Estlin 306’s. She played with the 306’s from 1972 through the 1980 season. Myrna was often recognized as the team’s most sportsmanlike player.
Off the field Myrna was also very active as team treasurer and as co-organizer (along with Leeta Gooding) of Estlin Sports Days. A trophy in her father Dewey Dunbar’s name was awarded to the winner of the sports day. Her summers were filled with league games, tournaments and sports days. The team played at Riceton, Milestone, Lang, Avonlea, Drinkwater, Rouleau, Wilcox, Briercrest, Sedley, Kronau, Pangman and Ogema. As the team developed and became more competitive, they joined the Regina “Last Spike League”. Myrna was playing on the team that won the championships in 1977, 1979 and 1981. She played in seven, class “D” provincial playoffs held at Central Butte, Vonda, Avonlea, Foam Lake, Mossbank, Eatonia and Prince Albert. The team hosted provincial playoffs in Dunnet Regional Park, Avonlea and also in Balgonie. Myrna’s ball playing years ended with the Estlin Junior Girls Fastball team alongside her daughter Laura. |
