Gray Cemetery

In 1924 a local ladies group - The Homemakers - purchased the land for the cemetery from Bill Greenslade for $150. They also paid for the upkeep, including the building of a fence and tree planting.

There were burials prior to the official engineered plan in 1925; Lot 1 Plot 1 in Block A - Williamson (two babies - thinking this includes first burial noted below in February 1924)
Lot 8 Plot 16 in Block A - Nina (Fisk) Leopold April 1923
Lot 4/5 Plot 17 in Block A - Axford baby September 1923
One of the first burials was a Williamson baby (also Lot 1 Plot 1 Block A). Mr. A. Marty, the local  blacksmith, built the little casket.
The Gray Cemetery title was officially registered in 1925. Trying to confirm whether it was registered to Gray United Church or transferred in 1954.
Some major upkeep occurred in 1996. Permanent surveyed area posts (steel pipe filled with concrete) were installed on each surveyed and lawn was planted.
Over the years hedge and trees have died off. Some gravestone refurbishment and tree planting was done in 2024. Several tilting gravestones were reset or received new foundations. Most families were found and were willing to contribute to the project. Markers were installed for the four unmarked graves (Cuddington, infants - Lafoy, Sauvie and Williamson).
Hopefully there will be some trees planted this fall (2024).
We'll continue to consult the original ‘plans’ and some day it would be nice to have a central driveway with a landscaped turn-around.
