The 306’s team began in 1972 when a meeting was organized to see if there was enough interest to form a team. The recruiters were Gary and Anita Ford and Leeta Gooding. It was quite a surprise when over thirty people showed up! Gary and Anita Ford were nominated to help organize the team and coach it! Anita was a player/coach with Gary on the bench. There was quite a task ahead trying to figure out each player position and abilities. While some frustrations may have been there at the beginning it was a lot of fun forming the team. There was some work that had to be done to the ball field that required extra help from some of the husbands. The diamond was soon in shape and the ‘new team’ was able to begin practices. It must have been a challenge to get everyone into games but somehow Gary managed it. Assistant coaching duties were fulfilled by Rod McDonald and Jim Hadfield.
The 306's were instrumental in reviving sports days in Estlin. Booths were initially made by stretching tarpaulins between two trucks to form canopies. Several years later a car garage, donated by Wes Jefferson, was moved to the fair grounds and renovated to serve as a booth. Volunteers from the community along with help from the Gray connections. Umpires, food, facilities and grounds people were needed. At that time there were plenty of teams from other communities to compete with. The 306’s played many battles against the Drinkwater team. The team also traveled to Kronau, Avonlea and later Rouleau. The 306’s choose gold, black and white as the team colours and some people thought that they should have been named the “bumble bees” or “hornets” instead of the 306’s. Later they would have black tops and black and white pinstripe pants. In the time that the 306’s were home in Estlin they advanced to seven class “D” provincial playoffs held at Central Butte, Vonda, Avonlea, Foam Lake, Mossbank, Eatonia and Prince Albert. The 306’s hosted twice; Dunnet Regional Park at Avonlea and Balgonie (1982). The 306’s were runners-up to Eatonia in Glen Ewen when they lost in two extra innings. As the team developed and became more competitive they joined the Regina “Last Spike League”. Dale Henry and Chris Bohlken began coaching in 1979. From that year through 2007, the team achieved 18 league titles and 22 provincial championships. This led the team to attend 24 Western Canadian Softball Championships in which the 306’s were awarded 8 gold, 7 silver, and 5 bronze medals. See below for annual standings. In the mid-1990's, as a group of players were advancing to 'masters' category (35-and-over) the 306's began competing in Masters tournaments as well. Players were recruited as required to make up the roster. There was much success with this group as well; 1995 4th, 1997 6th, 1998 3rd, 1999 2nd (losing to Sea Isle BC), 2000 2nd (losing to Vancouver Maralomas), 2001 3rd, 2002 2nd (losing to Manitoba Smittys), 2004 3rd, 2007 1st (defeating Moose Jaw). At the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton, AB the 306's won gold in 35-and-over ladies softball. |
