Gerald (Gerry) O'Brien 1920 - 2005

Inducted 2014 Baseball - Scorekeeper

Gerald was born five miles north of Riceton on the family farm and was the oldest of seven O’Brien children.  Gerald’s love of sports started at a young age when he and his siblings played ball in the summer with their father Tom. Gerald attended Cross and Riceton Schools where he played both baseball and Rugby/Football.  He also excelled at track and field.

Gerald joined the R.C.A.F in British Columbia as an aero-engine mechanic.  His last three years in the military were with the communications Squadron at Sea Island where he was appointed the Sports Promoter for the squadron. At the end of the war Gerald was offered a permanent position as sports caster but declined and instead returned to Riceton to continue farming with his father, Tom. Gerald was very active in the Riceton community and served on many boards including; Catholic Mens League, Rink, Coop and Credit Union.

With that said, Gerald’s true passion was sports…. of any kind!  Throughout the years he participated in many sports days announcing as well as keeping score. In actual fact, Gerald talked more about sports then he did about farming. He could recite the stats on the back of the hockey and baseball cards that his young grandson had collected before the grandson had even turned them over.  We were certain that  Gerald was “a Sports Nut!”
Hamlet of Gray has present day info.
